Luxury Is Not Exclusive

Here at Bulldog we love great design. We know it when we see it, and we appreciate the hard work it takes to create flawless beauty and effortless function. But great design doesn’t just exist for the experts, it exists to meet needs that people don’t know they have.

Consumers know good design when they see it. They may not have a firm grasp on what makes it special, but they know that it is. Great design is compelling, grabs people’s attention and pulls them in.

A good number of us here at Bulldog love to surf and were recently inspired by a video of our friend Matt Larson sharing the passion for luxury design that he brings to the wetsuit industry through his company, Matuse.

Here are a few uncommon sense design takeaways from Matt:

  1. There is a fine line between form and function. The key to successful design is to constantly improve your product. But don’t lose sight of the artistic side in the pursuit of functionality. These two elements must exist harmoniously for great design to be born.
  1. Luxury is not exclusive. Great design and a luxury experience should not be reserved for the elite. Work to find innovative ways to deliver an affordable product to everyone without sacrificing luxury.
  1. Luxury requires an emotional connection, a tactile experience, and a place in time. When you create something luxurious, it results in a bond with an inanimate object such that the relationship transcends the object itself.
